About the results:

Due 30-60mins after survey closes:

In order to make a three way pie chart for the Governors, Senators, and Representatives I will split it thusly*,

R: Republicans+ “evenly by state”

D: Democrats

I: “Split into three parts”

Those in the “Evenly by population” will be split evenly over R, D, and I

In the case of Governors, we know that you need a 3/4 majority to pass constitutional amendments, so anyone getting a 3/4 majority would be the most powerful group by states.

For the question about the Senate, the final result would be given like this:

Kept as Upper chamber= It is fair

Turned to Lower chamber= It isn’t fair+ it should be the lower chamber

*: don’t let this sway your vote! I will publish raw data too.

I think Oppo is socially liberal and very mixed in o ther areas, but still much farther to the left than the front page commenters.

I’m not American so I’m not familiar with the process, but aren’t midterms more important that presidential elections? I’ve always viewed the president as a lightning rod for praise and criticism for anything that goes wrong, like the CEO of a company. However, aren’t midterms about voting for governors or something at a state/local level or some shit like that? Isn’t this more important?

Yes and no. You’re right that the president isn’t as important as congress, but we vote for those guys during the presidential election, too. Midterms are largely the same, just without a change of president.

I think. Maybe it’s different people each time. I just know there are a lot on each ballot.

It depends if you respect the Executive branch or the Legislative branch more, and who’s wielding more power at the time. Right now I’d argue that the Executive branch is very important, probably a little bit more than the legislative.. But if we go many years back to the Radical Republicans post civil war, I’d say the Congress was more important.

Yes and no. The President, as head of the Executive Branch, nominates federal judges, the secretaries of federal departments, negotiates treaties, and has wide ranging powers through executive orders, though not as wide ranging as Trump believes. The mid-terms have some races for governor (not all states elect on the same cycle), various local and state races, and some US Senate and all US House positions. A lot of the same positions would be up in a presidential year so I wouldn’t consider it more important but it’s still very important.

My feeling is that the Jalopnik FP is the most conservative of the main GMG sites (though Splinter gets more conservative trolls). Kotaku sometimes has a disturbing number of MRA-types, but doesn’t always seem to be the case, so I suspect it’s related to where articles get linked as opposed to being a significant portion of the readership.

Representatives are elected for two years, so they’re elected both during midterms and during the Presidential election. Most governors are 4 years, but some are offset to take place during midterms.

Senators are elected for 6 IIRC , so it just depends. Sometimes they’re elected during midterms, other times during the presidential election.

Kinja'd!!! jminer > Spanfeller is a twat
11/06/2018 at 20:07

Kinja'd!!!4

I will admit some of the questions were a little specific and when googled led to some definite tin foil hat type websites. Like the federalizing of elections and presedentialism.

Living in a very red state that works hard to remove rights from women, minorities and immigrants I’m definitely game giving the state less ability to do so by further regulating it at the national level. This was the first major election where a voter ID law was in effect and it’s definitely a pain for folks like me who have the resources to deal with it, for those that don’t it’s an insane solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

I am game for a strong executive branch - yes we have a nutter in there now but in order for a government as large as ours to function effectively there needs to be autonomy and power there. This requires an executive branch to be able to make changes and execute policy both as the lawmakers mandate and within the non-defined grey area.

A move to a parliamentary system is an interesting thought. With the direct leader not elected but chosen by the ruling party. It works in several large governments in the world and the ability to recall your rulers mid-election cycle and shake up the entirety of government if it isn’t fulfilling the needs of the people is a very intriguing thought.

/end political thoughts

I don’t think that was me. But, I like the idea of separating the roles of head of state & head of government.

Let the head of state be nonpartisan and nonpolitical, represent the country as a whole, and be there to mediate any stalemates that might arise from partisan bickering in the legislature, and be a source of stability and institutional knowledge. Plus, I don’t see how a proper system of checks & balances can function if every single office is either held by a partisan politician, or appointed by one. Someone needs to check the politicians, they can’t do it for themselves.

Leave the politics to the head of government, who can be more directly accountable to voters and come/go as opinion changes.

I had a conversation with a “friend” this morning which I was reminded of by your comment. He actually thinks we should eliminate all welfare and social programs so the problems of addicts, unwanted pregnancy, and poverty “work themselves out,” affected parties dying being heavily implied. Sometimes I forget that there are people who actually believe that. He routinely rejects the concept of restorative justice and social justice in general.

Kinja'd!!! nermal > I like cars: Jim Spanfeller is one ugly motherfucker

Actually fixing real problems is difficult. Especially the ones you noted.

A lot of times you can improve certain issues with a “ solution” that seems counter-intuitive. A good example is needle exchange programs and “safe rooms” for people to do heroin. Yes, you’re preventing the spread of disease due to needle sharing, and helping to prevent ODs. Even though this is an improvement, it’s not a solution because it ignores the root cause of the problem.

On the other hand, shouting hyperboles is easy, enjoyable, and effective for winning elections. So, that’s why people do it.

People also vote selfishly, such as my vote against the tax increase. Surely a majority of people with hungry children that rent instead of own their house , and thus don’t pay property tax, all voted yes on it.

That is literally our job as citizens. That is why we vote. The house of representatives is supposed to be our voices in our federal government. That’s why its so important to pay attention to how your representatives are voting. A nd whether or not they are actually representing you, or just voting along party lines.

You’re not going to convince me. I consider all politicians to be a single class of people that need their power constrained to some degree. Voting isn’t the only answer, because you’re just replacing one with another, and you only vote every two years anyway. A lot of damage can happen in that time, not all of it reversible.

You mean the widespread disapproval of the senate? Yeah, that’s disturbing. I think it points to a lack of understanding of the intent of the founders. As far as how many republicans? Im  really curious about how many conservatives who would normally vote republican would go independent just because of the parties direction. I for one am a registered republican but my views align with right wing liberatarianism. I always give liberatarians a fair shake first before voting but usually spring for Republicans because of a more cohesive, dedicated platform.

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > Maxima Speed
11/07/2018 at 13:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Well. I understand and appreciate the role of the senate, but I also understand why some people feel that way about it...it’s very disturbing for liberals, who have been a majority of Americas for a number of years, to have the upper chamber of their congress be more conservative. I wouldn’t get rid of the senate, but I’d argue that the role of representing small states can be handled better from the lower chamber than the upper one. Granted, with the Senate on the lower chamber you loose some federalism; but how federalized is the US anyway by now?

Many contradictory governing philosophies arise from this, but other results are also interesting, many oppos believe in independents, and I think that’s great; they don’t have to align to national politics as much, which in the end is more democratic! maybe it would’ve been nicer to see a 33/33/33 split in the results, but I think that as the results came in for the Oppo Poll, the Oppo government would be   multipartisan. which in the end is better than the alternatives
